ROMAN CENTURION HELMET (Front To Back Mounted Plume) Imperial Rome Centurion Guard Helmet / Front To Back Crested Roman Officer's Helmet - 100 B.C. to 300 A.D. - The main officers of the Imperial Roman guard were the Centurions, each in charge of 100 men, hence the name "century". These Centurion Generals wore adorned plumed helms that could be easily seen in battle. This full size historical handcrafted helm is in every way as glorious as the originals with its full crest and brass accents. This Imperial Gaelic-Type helmet was the choice of officers who led the mighty Roman armies. The flamboyant crest actually served a purpose for the conspicuously practical Romans; it made the officer more visible to his men while offering the illusion of height that helped him appear more commanding. At different time periods of its use, the color of the plume signified different things. During some periods the color specified the officers rank, and at other times it designated units. The colors could be red, white, black, brown, reddish brown and others, as well as two or more colors mixed. At times the plume would run from front to back, and at other times it would be mounted crossways. Hand made, high carbon steel and fully wearable. ROMAN GLADIATOR SPIKE HELMET Roman Gladiator Spike Helmet Gladiators were professional fighters in ancient Rome who fought against each other and against wild animals, sometimes to the death, for the entertainment of spectators. These fights took place in arenas in many cities during the Roman republic and the Roman Empire. Gladiators usually fought in pairs; one gladiator against another. However, sponsors or the audience could ask for other combinations, such as several gladiators fighting together or specific gladiators against each other even from the outside of established troupe. Despite the extreme dangers of the profession, some gladiators were volunteers who fought for money. This career was the last chance for people who had gotten into financial troubles. GREEK SPARTAN - TROJAN - CORINTHIAN HELMET WITH PLUME Trojan Helmet - 800-420 B.C. - The Greek Corinthian helmet came from the Peloponnesian city of Corinth, and was custom made for the man who was to wear it. It took a great degree of skill to fashion the helmet. Around the 5th century BC we see representations of Spartans wearing crests transversely, arcing from one side to the other. This was probably a sign of high rank. When not in use, these helmets could be pushed back to rest on the head. This is the position common in Greek art as it allows the viewer to see a face.
