17-4 PH Stainless Steel (SS630)

Stacked round bars of 2205 duplex stainless steel

Overview

17-4 PH (also known as Grade 630 or UNS S17400) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel, alloyed with chromium, nickel and copper. Unlike standard austenitic grades, its strength is developed through heat treatment rather than cold work — a bar can be rough-machined soft, then hardened afterward to the exact strength and hardness the application calls for.

Alloyed with 15–17.5% chromium, 3–5% nickel and 3–5% copper, 17-4 PH combines corrosion resistance broadly comparable to 316 with tensile strength that can be tuned from around 930 MPa up to 1,310 MPa, depending on the heat-treat condition selected. This combination of tunable high strength with credible corrosion resistance is difficult to match with a standard austenitic or lower-alloy martensitic grade.

At Kormax, we supply 17-4 PH stainless steel in round bar from 10mm up to 150mm diameter, with a selection of sizes held ex-stock and the remainder available on indent. Every delivery is backed by 3.1 mill certification and full batch traceability, conforming to ASTM A564 / AMS 5643.

Common Applications

Pump shafts, impellers and valve components — oil & gas, water treatment
Aerospace fittings, fasteners and structural components
Food and beverage processing equipment
Precision-machined tooling and components hardened after machining
Marine hardware and fittings requiring higher strength than 316
Gears, bushings and wear-resistant machine components

Key Features

Precipitation-hardening grade — machine soft, then heat-treat to the required strength (H900–H1150)
Tensile strength tunable from approximately 930 MPa to 1,310 MPa depending on heat-treat condition
Corrosion resistance broadly comparable to 316 stainless steel
Superior resistance to stress-corrosion cracking compared with standard martensitic grades
Good machinability in the solution-annealed (Condition A) state, before hardening
Magnetic, due to its martensitic structure

Sizes & Availability

Kormax supplies 17-4 PH stainless steel round bar in New Zealand. A selection of sizes is held ex-stock in the H1150 condition, with the remainder of the range available on indent up to 150mm diameter, including alternative heat-treat conditions (H900–H1075) on request.

Selected sizes ex-stock (H1150 condition); full range available on indent up to 150mm.

Chemical Composition

17-4 PH owes its strength to a combination of chromium, nickel and copper, which enable the precipitation-hardening reaction during heat treatment. Every batch supplied by Kormax comes fully certified for peace of mind.

Carbon C ≤ 0.07
Manganese Mn ≤ 1.00
Silicon Si ≤ 1.00
Phosphorus P ≤ 0.040

Mechanical Properties

Unlike standard austenitic grades, 17-4 PH’s mechanical properties are set by heat treatment rather than fixed at the mill. Engineers can specify the exact strength/toughness balance required — from the higher-strength H900 condition through to the tougher, more corrosion-resistant H1150 condition.

Machining Allowances and Tolerances

When machining 17-4 PH (Grade 630 / UNS S17400) stainless steel, both dimensional accuracy and the alloy’s response to age-hardening need to be accounted for. Kormax round bar is supplied to ASTM A564 / A484 (Type 630) with ISO H-tolerances, the same rigorous approach we apply across our casting alloys and other engineered metals.
