Nitronic® 50 Stainless Steel

Overview

Nitronic® 50 stainless steel is a type of chromium-nickel steel that is strengthened with nitrogen and has a high level of performance. Nitronic grades maintain their austenitic structure and respond especially well to cold working. This significantly increases strength during cold working, enabling these grades to exhibit higher values of yield or tensile strength compared to conventional austenitic grades.

Some grades, such as Nitronic® 50, enhance yield strengths well beyond those of common stainless steel grades. Other grades, such as the Nitronic 60 Series, are designed for maximum galling and wear resistance. In cases when the common austenitic grades (304 and 316) prove inadequate for their strength and/or galling resistance properties, Nitronic stainless steel grades offer an alternative for critical components, especially those subject to corrosion, mechanical stresses, or sliding actions.

Nitronic stainless steel is part of the overall offering of engineering materials from Kormax. It complements our high-performance stainless steel materials used for industrial and marine applications.

Common Applications

Nitronic® 50 stainless steel was developed to provide higher strength, better wear resistance, and stronger corrosion performance compared to conventional stainless steels. Common applications include:
Marine hardware, such as shafts, fittings, and fasteners which are constantly exposed to saltwater.
Fasteners and valve stems, including nuts, bolts, pins, and threaded parts where seizing can be an issue.
Pump and valve components encompass wear rings, bushings, and shafts.
Food processing equipment necessitates corrosion resistance, cleanliness, and durability.
Automotive and aerospace components are subjected to high stress and mechanical loading.
Industrial equipment components made from precision metal alloys for a long service life.

Key Features

Nitronic® 50 stainless steel offers resistance to corrosion and mechanical strength not provided by common austenitic grades. It offers:
High strength compared to standard grades such as 304 and 316, particularly in nitrogen-alloyed variants.
Better resistance to wear and galling, especially in grades made for sliding or contact applications.
Great at resisting corrosion in a wide range of chemical, marine, and industrial settings.
Very low magnetic response, even after cold working.
Good toughness and ductility, supporting impact resistance and structural reliability.
Temperature stability allows performance across a wide operating temperature range.

Material Profile

Depending on the application, processing method, and applicable industry standards, the properties, grades, and supply forms of Nitronic stainless steel can vary. Nitronic grades are predominantly available in round bar profiles, with other geometries supplied by special request and typically subject to minimum order quantities. Final material selection should be based on the intended end use and relevant specification requirements, with confirmation during the engineering and procurement stage.

Chemical Composition

Nitronic stainless steels achieve their performance through controlled alloying, including elevated nitrogen content and the addition of elements such as chromium, nickel, manganese, and molybdenum.

Exact chemical composition ranges vary by Nitronic grade and applicable ASTM or UNS designation. Each batch supplied by Kormax is accompanied by material certification detailing the verified chemical and mechanical composition to ensure compliance with project and industry requirements.

(Typical Composition %)

Element Symbol Value
Chromium Cr 20-23
Nickel Ni 11-13
Molybdenum Mo 1.5–3.0
Nitrogen N 0.20-0.40
Silicon Si ≤1.0
Carbon C ≤0.06
Prosperous P ≤0.04
Sulfur S ≤0.03

Mechanical Properties

Nitronic stainless steels offer higher yield and tensile strength than conventional austenitic stainless steels without compromising ductility or toughness. This makes them well suited to applications involving mechanical loading, wear, and cyclic stresses.

Mechanical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, and impact resistance depend on the specific grade and method of production. Final mechanical requirements should be confirmed during material selection and engineering review.

Property Value
Tensile Strength ~758 MPa
Yield Strength ≥ 379 MPa
Elongation ≥ 35%
Hardness ~241 HB

Impact Toughness Excellent, even at cryogenic temps

Tolerances Chart

Dimensional tolerances vary depending on product shape, size, and manufacturing process. Tolerances may differ for hot-finished, cold-drawn, or machined products and are typically governed by applicable industry standards or customer specifications.

For precise tolerance requirements, Kormax can provide detailed tolerance information covering size, straightness, and surface finish for the specific Nitronic product and supply form requested.

Diameter (mm) Tolerance Class Tolerance (mm)
20-30 H11 +0 / –0.090 to –0.180

All bars are supplied to tight ISO H11 tolerances and meet relevant ASTM A276/A479 specifications.

Sizes & Availability

The Nitronic® 50 stainless steel round bar is available in a range of diameters (20.00 mm, 25.00 mm, and 30.00 mm) in 3 m lengths to support machining, fabrication, and engineered component applications. Size availability may vary depending on the supply source, processing method, and order volume. Custom grades and sizes are available by request.
