2205 Stainless Steel

2205 Duplex Stainless Steel

Overview

Grade 2205 stainless steel is a high-performance duplex stainless steel, combining roughly equal proportions of austenite and ferrite in its microstructure. This dual-phase structure gives 2205 a unique balance of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, outperforming standard austenitic grades such as 304 and 316 in many demanding environments.

Alloyed with around 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum and controlled nitrogen, 2205 offers outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking — a common failure point for conventional austenitic stainless steels. It also delivers roughly twice the yield strength of 316, allowing for lighter, thinner sections in engineered applications.

At Kormax, we supply 2205 duplex stainless steel in standard forms such as round bar and sheet, with custom sizes available on request. Every delivery is backed by batch certification and ISO-accredited quality systems.

2205 stainless steel suppliers recommend this grade where strength, chloride resistance and long-term durability are critical. Typical applications include:

Common Applications

Oil and gas processing equipment and pipework
Marine and offshore structures and components
Chemical processing and pressure vessels
Desalination and seawater handling systems
Pulp and paper digesters and liquor tanks
Heat exchangers, particularly in chloride-bearing service

Key Features

Excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking
Approximately double the yield strength of austenitic 304/316, allowing reduced section weight
Good weldability with correct procedure and filler selection
Strong resistance to fatigue and erosion-corrosion
Magnetic, due to its ferritic-austenitic duplex structure
Best suited to service temperatures between roughly -50 °C and 300 °C

Chemical Composition

Duplex stainless steel 2205 owes its strength and corrosion resistance to its balanced chemistry. High chromium and molybdenum levels deliver superior performance in aggressive settings. Every batch supplied by Kormax comes fully certified for peace of mind.

(Typical Composition %)

Element Symbol Value
Carbon C ≤0.030
Silicon Si ≤1.0
Manganese Mn ≤2.0
Phosphorus P ≤0.030
Sulfur S ≤0.020
Chromium Cr 22.0–23.0
Nickel Ni 4.5–6.5
Molybdenum Mo 3.0–3.5
Nitrogen N 0.14–0.20

Mechanical Properties

Engineers rely on 2205 duplex stainless steel for its exceptional strength, which is roughly double that of austenitic 316. This makes it well suited to high-pressure systems, structural fabrication and weight-critical applications.

Property Value
Tensile Strength  ≥ 620 MPa
Yield Strength ≥ 450MPa
Elongation ≥ 25% (A50mm)
Hardness ≤ 293 HB
