What is Investment Casting?
Investment casting, also known as lost wax casting or precision casting, is one of the most popular casting techniques for manufacturers. It produces precise and very intricate components with high accuracy and tight tolerances. Precision casting yields an excellent as-cast surface finish and a near-net shape, minimising secondary machining and material waste.
How Does Investment Casting Work?
Investment casting has developed into a popular process for producing products of extremely high quality and intricacy. Lost wax castings are the result of blending a liquid material with a ceramic mould and allowing it to solidify.
- Design: A wax injection mould is engineered to the precise tolerances required to produce the final component accurately.
- Injection: The mould is injected with wax to provide a base for intricate patterns to take their shape.
- Dipping: The wax mould is dipped in ceramic slurry, removed, coated in sand and allowed to dry. This process is then repeated to create the shell
- Drying: The shell is dried for 24-36 hours, before the wax is removed from the hardened shell using an autoclave.
- Heating: The mould is placed into a high-temperature oven to cure it for molten metal, which is then poured into the cavity.
- Removal: Once the metal is cool to the touch, the shell is broken away from the casting and any finishing touches are applied.
